Include Breakfast in Your Day, Everyday.

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

School and work mornings are wild! Not only do we have to be up early, dressed and ready for the day, but our kids also need to be up early, dressed and ready for the day. It's a challenge for everyone to have backpacks ready with lunches, snacks, homework, miscellaneous pages to return to school, and all the other details that still seem to surprise me on school mornings.

Even with these busy school mornings it's important for everyone to have breakfast everyday.

When we eat breakfast: -we have fewer hunger-induced stomach aches in the morning -kids have overall higher test scores -we concentrate better -we solve problems more easily -we have better muscle coordination -we regulate appetite for healthy eating -and we get enough of important nutrients like calcium.

We all know we feel better and can manage the day more successfully with a nourishing breakfast to get us started!

With early schedules we often don't have time for involved breakfast prep or really any cooking time. We all need a list of quick and practical breakfasts to keep us fueled on busy school and work mornings.

Keep in mind: kids can be involved with the breakfast prep and can even handle making their own breakfast as age appropriate.

Easy breakfasts ideas for busy people:

(see below for a printable menu of these quick breakfast ideas to help in your kitchen)

  • bagel with cream cheese (or nut butter, or melted cheese) and a glass of milk

  • yogurt topped with granola

  • yogurt topped with granola and fruit (add variety by using different fresh/frozen fruits)

  • toast with sliced fruit, cup of milk

  • toast with sliced or smashed avocado, cup of milk

  • oatmeal topped with nuts & berries

  • overnight oats

  • bagel sandwich with egg and cheese

  • toaster waffles plus fruit and a glass of milk

  • smoothies (use any milk, plus a fruit, and protein such as peanut butter or protein powder), add variety by just changing the fruits used and try a new smoothie often

  • cold cereals

  • reheat a slice of pizza

  • make ahead of time:

-bacon (keep it in the freezer ready to reheat in the microwave)

-muffins and reheat for a quick breakfast

-breakfast burritos

-breakfast sandwiches

-waffles and pancakes from the weekend can also be reheated

-French toast also freezes nicely, reheat in the toaster

-pancake roll-up with bacon or sausage

Use a few of these ideas this week, and add 1 or 2 for next week's breakfast rotation. Breakfasts don't have to be fancy or big, place the priority on making sure everyone has a breakfast available.
